Balancing Act by Ellen Stoll Walsh – a read aloud review

How about a book that makes physics lessons easy?   The first time we read this one, my youngest son laughed so hard at one point that we had to pause to allow him to recover.

It’s an extremely simple story that can’t take more than about two minutes to read.  It’s great for the preschool crowd on that front!

Two mice have built a teeter-totter out of a rock and a stick.  They manage to balance on it evenly (neat!) and then along comes a salamander.  Now they are not balanced.  But then another salamander comes and they manage to balance again.   Then a frog comes… and the story continues.

The graphics are sparse, colorful, and easy to understand (perfect for little ones).   The text is minimal leaving much of the story to the pictures.   I was amused so of course I read it with a happy, near laughing voice which is always catching.  Having my son have to lean over on the couch to catch his breath from laughing was a bit of a pleasant surprise!

It’s fun and worth checking out from the library.  I’m expecting my boys to try this on their own once the weather allows a bit more outside time.
